Overview
SWiiFT is a startup in Berkeley SkyDeck’s Pad-13 Incubator Program with a mission of reimagining the traveling experience by connecting travelers and locals through their mobile app.
As a UX/UI Design Intern on the frontend product team, I had the opportunity to contribute to and take ownership of projects that were high-impact on the company’s growth. Along with sidequests like shaping the new design system and app feature ideations, my main projects included implementing mobile app interactivity from static screens and redesigning the home page of SWiiFT’s website (swiiftapp.com) to optimize conversion rates.
Main Projects & Impact
↳ closely collaborated with the frontend team and backend engineers to design the interactions of an MVP mobile app by ideating product solutions with user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes to communicate interactable elements
↳ prototyped app demos for proof of concept presentation for investors/advisors which secured a company partnership with the Coleman Fung Institute
Project 1 [under NDA]
App Interactivity + Demos 🎉
↳ took initiative for the project after discovering a problem with the company’s goal for the website and users’ impressions
↳ worked through design audits, user flows, mid-fidelity wireframes, and developing mockup components to deploy final designs
↳ spearheaded a complete redesign of SWiiFT’s website home page to emphasize clarity in user flows and action items that increased waitlist sign-ups by 85% at the launch of the redesign (shipped Aug. 2022)
Project 2
Website Home Page Redesign 🛳
before
The goal of the website was to generate signups for the mobile app launch waitlist, but users were confused about the service of the company, where the action items throughout the site lead to, and what the waitlist was for.
now
The new designs clarified the product being highlighted and the purpose of the waitlist as well as what services come with the app. Waitlist signups and website engagement increased exponentially after the shipped date.
Reflections
Working with teams of designers, PMs, developers, and copy writers in a fast-paced startup environment was a rewarding experience, both in my personal growth and accomplishments made with the teams. I learned so much about the ins and outs of a product’s lifecycle, as well as the value in collaboration between different perspectives that goes into the development of the product and its success.
I initially had a misconception that each project I worked with would always follow similar steps of the UX cycle. Working with cross-functional teams made me realize that the perfect UX process is ideal, but in reality, design isn’t linear and is everchanging depending on the situation. I learned to know when it is appropriate to use which steps of the process (research, defining, etc.) to be efficient with my work and the time allotted.
Another lesson I learned was to be confident when taking initiative, contributing an idea in the moment, or sharing my opinion when appropriate. Becoming more confident and comfortable in my thoughts evidently showed progress in my workflow and engagement with other team members. Trust in the process and myself!
